slight detour
So I'm well aware that I'm falling behind on my blog updates but since it was my birthday last weekend, I'm giving myself a free pass. I'm sure word has spread but last weekend, Jason took me on a little bit of a road trip for my "golden" birthday. 25 on the 25th. We started with a game plan of visiting the Grand Canyon but that quickly changed thanks to stormy skies and wet sleeping bags.
Our first stop on the trip was Palisades, CO. Not too many people have heard of this small winery town but I have to say it's one of Colorado's best kept secrets. We arrived in the Palisades Friday afternoon and immediately hopped on our bikes and started the tour. We started at a small winery and tasted a few of the favorites. Then we rode over to the local distillery and sipped on homemade vodka's and gin's. DELICIOUS. Next stop was the Palisade's brewery where we sat outside in the sun and sipped on beers and chomped on smoked chicken wings. World's best combination next to diet coke and peanuts. By this point the sun was wearing us down a little bit and the cocktails were blurring the scenery if you know what I mean. I'm not the world's best cyclist to begin with so after you've put a few drinks in me, my balance isn't the best. So needless to say, I tripped on my bike and broke my toe. Ouch. The toes my parents spent $$ repairing with surgery a few years back. Opps, sorry Mom and Dad.
After our winery tours, we headed to Fruita, CO to camp for the night. Sadly at this point the storms were rolling in and we were stuck in our tent by 7PM with pouring rain outside. We'd stopped at a Mexican restaurant on the way to our campsite which turned out to be a HUGE mistake. Never eat Mexican when you're planning on spending the night in a 4x6 enclosed space for the evening. The next morning we woke up and within minutes we had the car packed and we were outta there. Next stop, the Grand Canyon.
We arrived at the Grand Canyon around 3PM or so. We hurried up and set up the campsite so we could head to one of the view points and check out one of the world's natural wonders. My favorite moment of the trip was right about here. Not because of the canyon, but because of Jason's reaction when he saw the canyon for the first time in his life. And I quote "I thought it'd be bigger". Luckily Jason bought me a video camera for my birthday so I have the moment on film to prove it. Watch above.
Anyways, long story short. We had a kick ass trip and ended up in Vegas. We lost a few bucks, gained a few memories, and filmed it all along the way. Thanks you to Jason for not kicking me out of the car at the Utah state line and for making this one of the best birthday's to date. Love you.
